The hotel, a historic university residence, offers a unique and budget-friendly accommodation experience in the heart of downtown Montreal. Its signature feature is its exceptional central location, providing unparalleled access to the city's vibrant core, making it an ideal choice for solo travelers, budget-conscious visitors, and those on-the-go who prioritize convenience and value over luxury. Guests consistently highlight the property's affordability and its secure environment, appreciating it as a practical base for exploring the city's attractions and events. This unique setup, operating as student dorms during the summer, is particularly well-suited for students or event attendees seeking a functional and well-located place to stay without extravagant amenities. To enhance your experience, consider bringing earplugs for potential street noise, especially if windows are open, and be prepared for a basic, dorm-style setting, which many find perfectly adequate for resting after busy days of sightseeing.
Facilities & Amenities
Guests generally find the hotel's facilities to be basic but functional, aligning with its budget-friendly, dorm-style nature. Many appreciate the convenience of luggage storage services, available both before check-in and after check-out, which is a significant benefit for travelers. Rooms are typically equipped with a desk, Wi-Fi, and a fan, with many also featuring a refrigerator and a sink, adding to in-room convenience. The property also offers communal laundry facilities for guest use. While there is a common lounge and a basic kitchen area with a microwave and toaster, some guests note that the lounge furniture is worn and the kitchen lacks essential utensils like plates, forks, or knives, which are reportedly deemed safety hazards. The building also features an elevator for higher floors, though initial access to reception requires navigating stairs. A courtyard is also available, providing a quiet outdoor space. The hotel emphasizes security, with measures in place to ensure guest safety.
Cleanliness & Room Comfort
Feedback on cleanliness and room comfort is mixed, reflecting the hotel's university residence origins. Most guests find the rooms to be generally clean, with fresh towels and sheets provided. However, some report issues with deeper cleaning, noting stains on furniture and floors, or finding hair on bedsheets upon arrival, indicating inconsistencies. A recurring theme is the lack of air conditioning, which can make rooms uncomfortably hot during summer, despite the provision of fans. Noise is another common concern, with thin walls allowing sounds from creaky floors, slamming doors, and street traffic to permeate, often requiring earplugs for a restful sleep. Most guests describe the beds as uncomfortable or having hard mattresses, and many lament the provision of only one small, thin pillow. While some rooms include a private bathroom, the majority utilize shared bathrooms and showers, which receive varied feedback on cleanliness, with some noting them as dirty or poorly maintained, particularly during busy periods. A significant concern for some guests is the presence of mice in rooms and common areas.
Location & Accessibility
The hotel's central location is overwhelmingly praised as its strongest asset, placing guests directly in the heart of downtown and within easy walking distance of numerous restaurants, shops, and attractions. Its proximity to public transportation is a major advantage, with the metro station just a short walk away, providing convenient access to various parts of the city and the airport bus route. Guests appreciate being able to explore Montreal on foot, with many key landmarks and event venues easily reachable. While the location is highly convenient, parking is not provided on-site, and guests are advised that street parking can be expensive and limited. However, nearby paid parking garages are available, offering a viable option for those traveling with a vehicle. The hotel's strategic position makes it an excellent base for sightseeing and experiencing the city's vibrant atmosphere, contributing significantly to a positive guest experience.
Staff & Service
The staff at the hotel generally receive high praise for their friendliness and helpfulness, contributing positively to the guest experience. Many guests highlight the easy check-in and check-out processes, noting that staff are often accommodating with early arrivals. Reviewers frequently commend the attentive service provided by the front desk and security personnel, who are described as welcoming and willing to assist with directions and inquiries. The presence of 24-hour security is also consistently appreciated, enhancing guests' sense of safety and well-being throughout their stay. While the majority of feedback is positive, a few guests report isolated incidents of unhelpful or unfriendly interactions, and some mention that the property can appear understaffed, potentially leading to slower service at times. Despite these occasional remarks, the overall sentiment indicates a dedicated and supportive team.
Additional Information
Guests should be aware of several important aspects for a comfortable stay. Accessibility can be a challenge upon arrival, as the reception area is located up two flights of stairs with no immediate elevator access, making it difficult for those with heavy luggage or mobility issues. While a disability elevator exists elsewhere, its location is not clearly indicated for initial check-in. The shared bathroom facilities raise privacy and safety concerns for some, particularly as they are often co-ed, with large gaps under doors and no designated areas to hang clothes, leading to discomfort for single women. Guests are advised to bring their own personal toiletries, such as shampoo and soap, as well as bath mats and face cloths, which are typically not provided. There have been reports of fire alarm communication issues, where messages are unclear due to echo in corridors. Additionally, some guests experienced maintenance noise and unpleasant generator smoke from nearby machinery. The laundry facilities have also been noted as occasionally non-functional.
